5 reasons skipping is good for you.

By Olubunmi Fajuyigbe.
I grew up in the government housing estate at Ibara, Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State. ours was a close knit neighborhood where the children took turns to spend certain evenings at their friends’ place. I recall we had a really low fence and only a barbed wire wall separated ours from our neighbours’. We all loved playing and skipping was one of those activities that we loved doing together.

Now that I’m grown, ( I’m still young though), I still love skipping. More so, now that I know what benefits I can derive from it as an adult.

Here are some of those benefits.

1. Skipping works the full body: This is good news if you are pressed for time. Having one exercise that can do the work of 5 is a welcome development. When you skip, you are working your arm, shoulder, chest, thigh, hamstring, gluteus, feet.

2. Skipping improves bone density: As we grow older, the density of our bones decrease. This is more true for women and leads to osteoporosis. Skipping is one of those exercises that help prevent this condition. However, if you already suffer from osteoporosis and related conditions, please avoid skipping.

3. Skipping is a mega calorie burner. It is said that skipping is one of the exercises that can help you burn the highest number of calories. We usually recommend a lot of skipping to our weight loss clients. Because it is a high intensity aerobic exercise, you even keep burning calories long after you put the rope down. Oh! What’s not to love right?

4.Skipping is one of the best form of cardiovascular exercises These are exercises that contribute to a healthy heart. By enhancing the capacity of your cardiovascular framework, your heart will perform more efficiently. You will also find yourself suffering less from shortness of breath amid various activities, as it will help you build your stamina.

5. It doesn’t require any expensive equipment yet it does the work. You can get a good skipping rope here in Nigeria for as low as N1,000. That, you will agree, is a small investment for such huge results.
Let me stop at these five even though there are many more. I hope these will encourage you grab a rope and get jumping soon.
Please note that as with all new exercise regimens, you should consult with and get the go ahead from your doctor before engaging in skipping.

At My figure 8 gym in Ibadan, we would love to partner with your organisation to organise a staff (or family) skipaton event that everyone would love and benefit from.
